A South African father has been praised for his bravery after fatally shooting an armed carjacker while defending his daughter during an attack outside their home. His actions have drawn widespread attention online, with admirers comparing him to “Chuck Norris and John Wick rolled into one.”
Dramatic surveillance footage captured the father firing multiple shots at the suspected criminals, who apparently targeted the family just four days after they moved into their new residence in Pinetown, South Africa.
The father, identified as Sidney Hill, was driving out of his driveway late on Oct. 9 when two armed attackers suddenly emerged from the back of a Renault Kiger and opened fire on his vehicle.
Hill immediately reached for a handgun tucked into his waistband and fired back at the assailants while attempting to shield his frightened daughter, who was seated beside him, according to the video.
Approximately 27 gunshots were discharged during the 14-second exchange of fire. One of the bullets struck a member of the group in the head, causing fatal injuries.
“It was like a warzone with bullet after bullet,” recalled a nearby resident who had been watching television when the gunfire erupted outside.
“It went on for about 20 seconds but we stayed inside until the police turned up and when we came out there was a body lying dead in a drive.”
Hill, who works as an operations manager in Durban, has since received considerable praise for his ability to respond to the armed attack and protect his family.
“This man is a hero,” said Andreas Mathios, an official with Marshall Security who is widely recognized in the community as the “Durban superman.”
“He firstly and instinctively made sure that his family was safe. He was consistently alert, and even though there was some sort of delay in returning fire when he was fired upon at the right time, he managed to return fire and neutralize the threat. I commend him for his actions.”
Video footage documenting Hill’s response has circulated extensively across social media, attracting numerous reactions from viewers impressed by his actions. One commenter described the father as “Chuck Norris and John Wick rolled into one.”
“Of all the people the carjackers could have picked on they got him lol!,” the commenter wrote, mocking the attackers for choosing Hill as their target.
Four additional suspects escaped from the scene following the gunfight. Authorities have not provided information regarding their physical conditions or whether any of them sustained injuries.
Police have opened three investigations into attempted murder, along with a separate investigation concerning the attempted carjacking.
